Everybody finds water damage in their homes now and then. Sometimes it’s a leaky pipe in the basement, or the caulking in your shower has cracked causing leaks in the substrate. Whatever the cause of the problem, water damage over time can lead to mold!

Mold has become a national scare since the beginning of the 21st century. Ever since the death of Ed McMahon’s dog from mold poisoning and the hazardous ruin his home was left in, mold has become a pandemic scare in the country. To dispel some of the rumor’s according to the EPA, here are the common health problems of mold:
1. nasal stuffiness
2. eye irritation
3. coughing
4. wheezing
5. skin irritation
6. headaches
7. fever
8. shortness of breath
9. mold infections in your lungs

The symptoms that mold may cause is as dependant upon the person’s genetics and immune system just as much as the type and quantity of mold present.

All toxic mold IS NOT black and all black mold is not toxic. There are over a 100,000 different types of mold, and the only way to specify the type of mold is by laboratory testing. A contractor who tells by a visual look that a type of mold is toxic either does not know his trade well enough or does not have your best interests in heart.

A mold remediation contractor should have proper training with a minimum 3 years experience in the abatement field. The contractor should maintain equipment such as air filtration devices, manometers, polyethelene, zip poles, personal protection equipment, respirator masks, and non-toxic chemicals. References should be available upon request.

Whether in a commercial building or a residential home, the causes of mold remain the same. Sources of water intrusion should be stopped and dried within 24 hours to prevent mold. The humidity levels in a home or building should be kept below 50% to prevent mold growth. Condensation on pipes, leaks behind poorly sealed flashing and shingles, caulking cracked along window sills, are all common causes of mold growth. Bathrooms should be exhausted through the roof and not into the attic or soffits. The soffits should not be blocked with insulation, nor should the humidifier on a furnace not be set too high.

There are many issues to look at it when concerning mold. If you desire a qualified contractor, look at A & I Health Solutions at Ohio Mold Removal for more information.
